The engine clutch is activated by centrifugal force, and the driven unit is torque sensitive, meaning it is responsive to the torque demand of the driven shaft or jackshaft, to adjust the ratio of the system for the power required according to the various conditions. The variable speed drive system normally consists of an driver clutch, and a driven unit, connected into a system by a "V" type belt.
